New York City Subway (How To Guide)

  1. The uptown or downtown is only used in Manhattan. If you are in the other boroughs (like Brooklyn for example), they do not use that (and you will notice in Manhattan it will say “downtown and Brooklyn”). If you want to get to Manhattan from Brooklyn, it will just say whatever street you’re under and Manhattan. Just FYI. Personally, I find subway maps confusing to read and I never use them. When I was first learning the subway system, a friend of mine told me “if you ever get lost, the A train will always take you to the Port Authority” (it also goes to Penn Station). That always stuck in my mind. The maps are good if you can read them.
